A festive class with ceramicist Zoe Halliday

Ceramic Christmas Decorations: An Introduction to Sgraffito

Join ceramicist Zoe Halliday for a festive, hands-on introduction to sgraffito, exploring line, pattern and texture through clay.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to decorate your own set of six pre-made ceramic Christmas decorations using the sgraffito technique. Choosing from two stars, two snowflakes and two circular decorations, you’ll explore how to carve into the coloured clay surface to reveal the contrasting layer beneath, creating intricate patterns, textures and festive designs.

Suitable for beginners, the session includes demonstrations and guidance throughout, giving you the opportunity to experiment with mark-making and develop your own decorative designs. You’ll be able to personalise each piece using a selection of colours and patterns, creating a collection of unique decorations to hang on your Christmas tree.

Your decorations will be finished with a transparent glossy glaze and fired after the workshop. They’ll be ready for collection approximately three weeks later, just in time for Christmas.

What you’ll learn:

  • An introduction to the traditional sgraffito technique.

  • How to create patterns and textures by carving into coloured clay.

  • Experimenting with line, mark-making and decorative details.

  • How to develop your own designs and personalise ceramic surfaces.

What’s included:

  • Six pre-made ceramic decorations (two stars, two snowflakes and two circles).

  • All materials and tools.

  • Demonstration and guidance from ceramicist Zoe Halliday.

  • Glazing and firing of your finished decorations.

Please email us in advance with any accessibility requirements.

Zoe Halliday

Zoe Halliday is a ceramicist based in South West London, creating functional ceramics from her studio, Zoe’s Clay, alongside facilitating ceramics workshops within further education.

Zoe’s work is rooted in nostalgia and childhood memories, with bold colour, pattern and her sweet tooth often informing her designs. Alongside these influences, Zoe carefully considers how each piece feels and is experienced by the user. She creates ceramics to bring a little joy and brighten an ordinary day.

Working across hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, Zoe creates vessels that are as enjoyable to use as they are to make. Her fascination with clay began during her Mixed Media Fine Art degree, where she explored plaster, clay and found materials through sculptural work. Her early exploration of these materials sparked a lasting interest in the tactile qualities of clay, which continues to shape her practice today.
