Painting Rubbish

A course with artist Michelle Maddox, accompanying her exhibition at The Gallery at Green & Stone

Join artist Michelle for a hands-on oil painting masterclass.

With a focus on muted colours, mixing warm and cool greys/whites.

We will be working alla prima in oils, looking at remnants of paper, old cloths, paper cups, paper bags, cardboard boxes and tissue.

We will look at how to add colour to whites using both a primary and limited palette of complimentary colours.

This can be for beginners wanting to learn about colour theory, but also for more experienced oil painters wanting to explore new ideas.

All art materials are provided by Green & Stone.

Michelle Maddox

I begin my paintings by looking closely at the things around me, which can be anything from objects and interiors to landscapes and people. What draws me in is a particular arrangement of colour and form.

Painting is a way for me to slow down and pay attention. As I work, I search for something that feels grounding, though not necessarily solid or fixed. Certain shapes and colours can evoke feelings without belonging to a clear story. I am interested in the space between what we see and what we feel or imagine.

Although my paintings begin with observation, they are not attempts to reproduce visual reality. Instead, I use what I see as a starting point to create something poetic.

I mainly work with oil paint, with colour at the centre of my practice. Colour helps me create a sense of warmth, calm, and intimacy. I often scrape back the paint, allowing shapes to soften, break apart, and disappear. Through this process, the painting gradually becomes less about describing what is there and more about creating an atmosphere and a feeling.
