A PALETTE OF ARTISTS
‘In this exhibition, these artists show us the breadth of what painting can still achieve today. From finely tuned studies grounded in classical discipline to quick, impressionistic gestures that catch the flicker of a passing moment’
-
There is something deeply reassuring, and quietly thrilling, about encountering a group of artists who not only observe the world with care, but who translate that vision into works that pulse with vitality, sensitivity, and truth. A Palette of Artists brings together eight accomplished painters, each with a distinct and discerning eye. What unites them is not a fixed style or subject, but a shared instinct: to look closely, and to offer the world back to us through paint, reimagined, reframed, and recharged.
In this exhibition, these artists show us the breadth of what painting can still achieve today. From finely tuned studies grounded in classical discipline to quick, impressionistic gestures that catch the flicker of a passing moment, many works carry a striking immediacy, a kind of visual exhale, spontaneous and fresh. Elsewhere, we encounter paintings shaped by patience and precision, composed arrangements where light, colour, and form are quietly built up and deeply considered.
What becomes clear as we move through the exhibition is not just the technical skill on display, but the many different ways an artist can choose to see. Each painter brings their own filter to the world, not only in terms of subject, but in mood, pace, and emphasis. Whether it’s a domestic interior, a changing sky, the fall of late afternoon light across a building, or the pattern of shadows in a quiet street, each work asks us to pause, to pay attention, and to look again.
It’s this variety of thought, of eye, of hand, that gives the show its richness and its energy. There’s no striving for uniformity here, no attempt to herd ideas into a single voice. Instead, we are offered a collection of visions, personal and particular, that remind us how endlessly changeable and surprising the act of painting can be.
I always welcome the reminder that the painted image, far from being a relic, remains alive, alert, and full of possibility. These are paintings, but they are also moments of noticing, of feeling, and of finding form. They speak to that deeply human desire to stop time, however briefly, and make sense of the world through the lens of art.

She regularly exhibits with these groups and has also shown work with the Pastel Society, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition, and the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, among others.
Lucy has held several major solo exhibitions. In 2021, she was invited by the National Trust at Petworth House to paint its historic park and gardens. The resulting body of work formed Dawn to Dusk, a three-month solo exhibition within the house itself.
In 2022, she presented Constable’s Walks at the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) Gallery, London—an exhibition of oils and watercolours inspired by three walks John Constable took in and around Brighton.
Her 2024 show, Times of the Day, featured over eighty new works in oil, watercolour, and gouache, exploring light across landscapes and seascapes from dawn to night. This exhibition was also held at the RWS Gallery.
Lucy’s work has received several awards. She won the Sloane Stanley Medal at the Chelsea Art Society in 2022 and was a finalist for the British Art Prize the same year with her large oil Golden Dusk (120 x 200 cm). Max White AROI collects information about a subject through plein air observation, sketches, paintings, notes. He then works from either drawings, photographs, or small plein air paintings as references alongside colour notes in the studio whilst working on more considered or ambitious paintings.
Painting for Max is about holding onto moments where he experiences something profound; a powerful feeling that usually arises from light in the landscape, although he finds subjects everywhere from the west end of London to his kitchen. His paintings can take weeks or months to complete, over that time he fights a battle with the paint surface to translate and preserve the emotion he experienced when he first saw the subject.
Max’s paintings have gathered significant praise in past few years. In 2024 he was awarded “Artist of The Year” by The Circles of Art foundation. In 2023 he was awarded the 1st prize Winsor and Newton Young Artist Award by the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
In 2022 he won the Next Generation Award at the Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition, and the Green and Stone Prize for a painting from Chelsea Arts Society. This gave him the opportunity to put on a solo exhibition of work at the Gallery at Green and Stone in Chelsea, which was eventually held in May 2024.
In 2021, he was awarded both the Emerging Artist award and the 3rd place Winsor and Newton Young Artist Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters exhibition.
He is currently an associate member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, a member of the Wapping Group of artists, and an Associate of Chelsea Arts Society as of 2024.

Penny German works from her garden studio in rural Northamptonshire, inspired daily by her garden and the surrounding countryside. The bleating lambs and curious calves beyond the wall are her ever-present company.
Penny’s paintings emerge from the seasons: she begins around 9 am arranging objects and shadows for composition that captures light’s subtle moods. Still life is for Penny, a meditative exploration of light and form, always influenced by seasonal changes—perhaps shaped by years abroad without them.
A cupboard full of props—ceramics, curios, wallpapers—adds texture and character to her arrangements.
Penny’s day concludes as the light fades, with paintings propped on the kitchen drying shelf and reviewed over a cup of tea. Once complete, she chooses their gallery destination or sells them via social media.
Though her roots lay in still life, Penny also paints en plein air, both locally and abroad, especially with artist friends. Penny also runs workshops, relishing her former teacher’s role as mentor, sharing her process with others.
Penny is a member of RBSA and Chelsea Art Society and has exhibited with ROI, winner of The Artist purchase prize (Ken Howard) and writes articles for The Artist.

John Killens grew up beside the Thames Estuary with open Essex countryside around. Being able to roam the surrounding fields and rivers with freedom reflected in his first approach to painting, predominantly landscape and marine.
Painting plein air is a large part of his present work, enjoying the challenge and statements to be made in front of a subject.
Working in Oil, Watercolour and Pastel, entirely dependent on the subject, some of his plein air works are left as a statement of time and place. Others are used as the basis for further exploring the subject if he feels that there is more to say. John is increasingly driven towards putting atmosphere as the main statement in his work and it has now become his prime reason for painting.
Carrying with the painting influences of early life, John has added to these with an increasing interest in painting urban scenes- London and the Thames. John is also greatly influenced by still life- painting everyday objects so often overlooked.
To Rewind a little:
Growing up near Southend on the Thames Estuary, starting to paint when very young, School followed by Art School and his first job was as an illustrator. John became a fulltime painter in 2000, elected a member of the Wapping Group in 2008 and election to Chelsea Art Society in 2014.
John’s work has been shown in open Exhibitions with Royal Society of Marine Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Watercolour Society, winning the Watercolour prize at the RSMA and at Chelsea Art Society. John is a regular Exhibitor at the Henley Royal Regatta. His watercolour of the Cutty Sark under conservation in Greenwich was purchased and used as display by the Cutty Sark Trust.
His work is now held in collections from China to the United States.

Robbie Murdoch who lives in Hampshire has always been passionate about drawing and painting plein air and whilst working in his profession as a dentist he concentrated on watercolour.
He started drawing and painting at school and continued whilst studying dentistry at Guys Hospital and whilst travelling during holidays. After retiring in 2008 he has been able to devote more time to his love of painting and now concentrates on oils rather than watercolours. He studied portraiture at the Heatherley School of Fine Art.
His objective is to reveal the beauty and atmosphere of a subject by paying particular attention to the light and composition.
Currently he is painting regularly as a member of the Wapping Group of Artists and as an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, he has often exhibited at the Mall Galleries.

Painting for Roger Dellar is about personal development. It is an ongoing process never to be settled, always being inspired by another aspect of his painting, particularly paint surface and mark-making. The journey is from the painting’s concept to final end-result.
Roger says that he must have been a moth in his past life; always being drawn to the light.
His subject matter remains as always about people and their environments, their body language, whether in bars, interiors, markets, restaurants etc, but in recent times his interests have turned to landscape and coastal scenes, often painting from life, he is at his happiest painting plein air capturing the moment, and always with a sketchbook to hand.
Membership: Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, Royal Society of Painters in Oil, The Pastel Society, Associate of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, The Wapping Group, British Plein Air Painters, and Chelsea Art Society.
Exhibited: RI, RWS, PS, RSMA, NEAC, ROI, RBA, RA Summer Show, RWEA, RP, Singer Friedlander/Sunday Times.
Awards Winner of over 30 National and International Awards.
