‘Introduction to Seascapes’ - an art class with Georgie Stewart

Date: Wednesday 29th May, 18.00 - 20.30

Venue: The Gallery at Green & Stone

Tickets: £45

Introduction to Seascapes

This workshop is designed to accompany Georgie Stewart’s upcoming exhibition ‘Hermit’.

This session is for all lovers of the sea: wild swimmers, beachcombers, windsurfers and those who feel pulled to roam along the beach with a sketchbook in hand. Georgie will walk you through each stage of creating your own unique seascape painting, perhaps inspired by a particular coastal spot that is special to you.

We will begin with a discussion of contemporary artists and old masters who have looked to the sea - from Alfred Wallis and Turner to Tracey Emin’s Margate beach hut, and of course Hockney’s diverse approaches to representing water. Using mixed media techniques, you will learn all of Georgie’s tips and tricks on materials and their application, composition and creating atmosphere, before we move on to the painting itself. Please feel free to bring your own inspiration photograph if you would like; reference images will be provided for those who require them.

All levels are welcome.

All art materials provided by Green & Stone.

About Georgie Stewart

Georgie Stewart is an illustrator artist based in Devon. Georgie’s artworks combine her distinctive use of vivid colours with a natural drawing style to form evocative landscapes. Joy, optimism, curiosity, a zest for life - these are the themes Georgie aims for in her work and they’re reflected through the energetic colour fusions she concocts.

Georgie spent most of 2022 travelling through Europe in her bright orange camper van Jaffa, completing an artist residency on the Greek island of Skopelos. During her time on the road, she planted the seed of an idea to move to the seaside upon returning home to the UK. Georgie now lives a cosy, quiet life in a cottage on the North Devon coast, where she spends most of her time in her garden shed studio.

After obtaining a masters degree in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in 2019, Georgie trained at Camberwell College of Art with an MA in Illustration before continuing her studies at the Royal Drawing School in London. Georgie is represented worldwide by IllustrationX, and has created illustrations for the likes of Apple, Crown Paints, Soho Press and Travel + Leisure magazine.
