‘A Palette Painting Day’, with Penny German

At this free event, artist Penny German will be demonstrating her approach to oil painting the floral still life!

‘I shall be working from life in the gallery painting a still life/floral piece in oils using the wet-in-wet approach.’ - Penny German

About Penny German

Penny German works from her garden studio in rural Northamptonshire, inspired daily by her garden and the surrounding countryside. The bleating lambs and curious calves beyond the wall are her ever-present company.

Penny’s paintings emerge from the seasons: she begins around 9 am arranging objects and shadows for composition that captures light’s subtle moods. Still life is for Penny, a meditative exploration of light and form, always influenced by seasonal changes—perhaps shaped by years abroad without them.

A cupboard full of props—ceramics, curios, wallpapers—adds texture and character to her arrangements.

Penny’s day concludes as the light fades, with paintings propped on the kitchen drying shelf and reviewed over a cup of tea. Once complete, she chooses their gallery destination or sells them via social media.

Though her roots lay in still life, Penny also paints en plein air, both locally and abroad, especially with artist friends. Penny also runs workshops, relishing her former teacher’s role as mentor, sharing her process with others.

Penny is a member of RBSA and Chelsea Art Society and has exhibited with ROI, winner of The Artist purchase prize (Ken Howard) and writes articles for The Artist.
