‘Beyond the Still Life: An Oil Painting Workshop’ with Oscar Jin
Join us this Summer for a workshop with Oscar Jin, where you will learn to develop a complex and imaginative still-life composition in oil paint.
Oscar will guide all participants through three crucial stages (over three, three-hour sessions) to creating your masterpiece.
In the First session attendees will compose their work in drawing, employing the imagination to playfully combine objects, and transfer this to canvas. In the Second session, attendees will ‘block in’ their composition with a careful attention to creating rich colour and value relationships. In the Final session, atendees will complete their work, learning to accentuate textures, employing glazes and scumbles for atmosphere and depth.
With direct demonstration and one to one guideance, this workshop will cast away doubts that one may have in the workflow of composition and painting. Additionally, attendees should expect to leave with a nuanced idea of compsition and colour theory.
A Variety of still-life items will be arranged into a composition from which we will paint, however we also welcome you to introduce your own special objects.
All levels are welcome.
All art materials are provided by Green & Stone.

‘Speed Painting: The Quick Portrait in Oils’ with Oscar Jin
Join us this Summer for a workshop with Oscar Jin, where you will learn to capture the portrait at great speed using the fluid medium of oil paint.
Oscar will firstly demonstrate to all participants an efficient way to form the portrait through distinctions in value/tone and colour temperature, and
explain how to identify ‘anchor points’ (focal facial features that position the portrait in proportion).
With this simple theoretical background, attendants will jump into creating several 10 and 20 minute portraits in oils, working from the life model from different perspectives.
This challenging excersise employs both analytical and intuitive modes of thought, simultaneously putting the painter into a wonderful state of mental flow apt for creativity.Through repetition, painting and scrubbing away, this exercise helps bypass the creative block of perfectionism and promotes a faster feedback loop, key to developing the craft.
Expect to take home an expressive, not ‘photorealistic’, portrait that captures some of the essence of the sitter with brave, flowing brushwork.
All levels are welcome.
All art materials are provided by Green & Stone.
