Join filmmaker, director and experienced workshop facilitator Miranda Peyton Jones for an evening of analogue animation inspired by the work of Russell Herron.
Using charcoal, paper and the simple principles of stop-motion animation, participants will discover how a sequence of hand-drawn images can be transformed into moving film. Drawing inspiration from Herron's exhibition, Miranda will guide participants through the process of creating their own short animated piece while sharing the techniques she has developed throughout her professional practice.
Blending traditional creative skills with contemporary technology, this workshop celebrates the expressive possibilities of charcoal while introducing participants to the world of moving image. Whether you are an artist, a filmmaker or a complete beginner, Miranda's welcoming and supportive teaching style will help you develop the confidence to experiment, play and bring your ideas to life.
All materials will be provided. Participants simply need to bring a modern iPhone or Android phone with the free Stop Motion Studio app downloaded before the workshop. If possible, we also recommend bringing a portable charger.

Miranda Peyton Jones
Miranda Peyton Jones is an award-winning animation director, lecturer at Kingston School of Art and Artist in Residence at FishTank Workshop & Gallery.
Working primarily with analogue and traditional animation techniques, her work is characterised by a playful and sensitive approach, exploring the relationship between narrative, movement and material. Alongside her own practice, Miranda is passionate about making animation accessible and creating welcoming spaces for creative exploration.
She has facilitated workshops for organisations including the Barbican and has worked with clients including the BBC, Gavi, American Eagle and Motto Pictures. Her graduation film, Jeremy, My Father, was nominated for eighteen film festivals, including the British Animation Awards, and won six awards.
