A two-part workshop led by Oscar Jin, moving from observational figurative drawing among the V&A's sculpture collection to an imaginative oil painting developed in the gallery; from disegno to colore. The course is built around foundational drawing practice, close individual guidance, and the experimental journey from observation to colourful invention.
Session One — Disegno (9 October, 4 – 7 pm)
In the first session students meet inside the Victoria and Albert Museum for a drawing session, working directly from figurative sculpture. A tutorial will lay out the foundations of classical drawing through the concept of ‘disegno’. resources on hand to help everyone begin with clarity and confidence. One-to-one critiques and assistance will run throughout the session, ensuring each student designs an expressive and compelling subject to paint. (After 7pm, students are welcome to keep drawing independently in the museum, while Oscar works alongside them on his own drawing on-site)
Session Two — Colore (16 October, 4 – 7 pm)
The second session will bring the course's central shift: from observation to imagination, from disegno to colore. Students will first transfer their drawing to canvas using an oil- transfer method. After this, rather than painting the sculpture's true colouring, students draw upon existing master paintings, choosing and transposing their colours onto the prepared painting. The exercise invites an inventive rather than literal use of colour, allowing students to reinterpret complexion, harmony, and mood through the chromatic language of the masters.

Oscar Jin
Oscar Jin is a London-based artist. He studied art history at the Courtauld Institute and classical drawing and painting at the Accademia Vivarium Novum in Rome. Working primarily in oils, pastel & dry media, his current practice centers on veristic portraiture and narrative painting inspired by ancient myth.
