A three-day creative intensive for young artists aged 9–13, designed to develop technical skills, confidence and portfolio-ready work.
Across three mornings, students will explore painting, drawing, colour, light and shade through a combination of guided exercises, demonstrations and individual support.
The course begins with a day of experimentation and skill-building, inspired by artist Michelle Maddox who will join the group for a short talk and painting demonstration. Students will work from still life, exploring acrylic paint and oil pastels while learning how colour, light and shade can be used to create depth and dimension.
Over the following two days, students will develop their own painting around a subject that is meaningful to them, perhaps a treasured object, photograph or image connected to a sense of belonging. Working with layers, detail, colour and tone, they will develop their piece with guidance and individual feedback from artist Ruby Hughes.
The course is ideal for young artists preparing portfolios for 11+ and 13+ art scholarships, as well as those who simply want to develop their creative and technical skills in a focused, supportive environment. No previous portfolio or scholarship experience is required.
Each student will receive a Green & Stone-curated portfolio starter kit, including materials selected to support their creative work throughout the course and encourage them to continue developing their practice beyond the workshop.

Ruby Hughes is a qualified and experienced art teacher with a passion for inspiring young people to unlock their creativity and build their technical skills to express themselves creatively. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and has 15 years’ experience teaching in a wide range of settings around the world.
Here in London, she currently holds a post as Head of Art at a top North London prep school and has an in-depth knowledge of the art scholarship application process for 11+ and 13+ entry into independent secondary schools.
Past students have had their work selected for exhibitions including the Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show and Hampstead Summer Festival, as well as gaining art scholarships to independent secondary schools including King’s College, Belmont, Merchant Taylors’ and North Bridge House.
