Colour, Composition & Abstraction course

Join artist Helle Johansen-Baker for a day exploring the expressive possibilities of abstract painting through colour, composition, and experimentation.

Inspired by Helle's contemporary painting practice, this immersive workshop invites participants to discover how abstract paintings can evolve from observation, intuition, and playful exploration. Through a series of guided exercises, you'll investigate colour relationships, composition, layering, texture, and expressive mark-making before developing your own finished abstract painting.

Beginning with practical demonstrations and colour studies, participants will build confidence through experimentation before creating their work on wood panels. Throughout the day, Helle will share insights into her creative process while offering individual guidance and encouragement.

Suitable for beginners and experienced painters alike, this workshop provides a welcoming environment to develop confidence in abstraction while discovering new ways of approaching colour and composition.

Helle Johansen-Baker

Based in Essex, Helle Johansen-Baker is a contemporary abstract painter whose work explores the relationship between colour, movement, and composition. Through layers of expressive mark-making and carefully balanced colour palettes, she creates paintings that evoke atmosphere, emotion, and a sense of place without directly representing the world around us.

Inspired by both the natural environment and the intuitive process of painting, Helle's practice embraces experimentation, allowing each work to evolve through successive layers and spontaneous gestures. Her paintings invite viewers to slow down, observe, and discover their own connections within the abstract forms.

In this workshop, Helle shares her approach to abstraction, encouraging participants to experiment with colour, composition, and texture while developing confidence in their own creative process.

From Plant to Print: Monoprinting with Sophia Ponté

Join artist Sophia Ponté for an intimate evening exploring the expressive possibilities of monoprinting.

Inspired by Sophia's own artistic practice and the natural world, participants will work from a carefully arranged still life of seasonal flowers, fruit and botanical forms to create a series of unique monoprints.

Beginning with an introduction to Sophia's work, the workshop will explore the fundamentals of monoprinting. Through demonstrations and individual guidance, participants will experiment with the medium while developing their own expressive responses to the still life.

Perfect for both beginners and experienced artists, this workshop offers an opportunity to discover the spontaneity and beauty of monoprinting in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Sophia Ponté

Sophia Ponté (b.1996) is a London-based fine artist whose practice spans drawing, printmaking and painting. She holds a Veterinary MB from the University of Cambridge (2021) and completed the Online Drawing Development Year at the Royal Drawing School (2025). She has recently been awarded the Newman Young Artist Scholarship to study at The Essential School of Painting (2026-2028). 

From the Artist:

I work to explore my relationship with the natural world, expanding upon observed quotidian moments through both real and imagined possibilities. I gather the images and natural materials that saturate my life, searching for moments where the boundary between human and nature becomes indistinct. As I tend my garden, scavenge plants and grind natural pigments into paint, there is a shift between the physical nature of these materials and the value bestowed upon them. They are the foundation for my studies of nature and life, two things which for me, remain inextricably connected.

Moving beyond traditional academic methods, participants will experiment with observation, mark-making, movement, and composition while drawing from a live model.

Through a series of guided exercises and demonstrations, Minna will encourage participants to develop their own visual language, exploring expressive line, abstraction, and creative responses to the figure. Whether you're new to life drawing or looking to refresh your practice, the workshop offers a welcoming and supportive environment to experiment and build confidence.

Rather than focusing on achieving a perfect likeness, the session encourages participants to discover how colour, line, texture, and composition can capture personality and expression.

Working from a live model, Minna will guide participants through a series of drawing exercises using a variety of materials and techniques, encouraging a playful and intuitive approach to portraiture. Through demonstrations and individual guidance, participants will build confidence while exploring new ways of responding to the human face.

‘Perspective and Tonalism’

Join artist Elena Stogneva during this Summer Exhibition 2026 for a relaxed workshop combining outdoor sketching (plein air) with in-studio painting. Centred on the urban landscape, we'll explore how to create depth, distance, and atmosphere in the cityscape using perspective — moving from a confident structural drawing through to an expressive finished painting.

Session 1: Drawing & Composition
We begin outside, sketching the cityscape from life and using linear perspective to capture a convincing sense of space, scale, and depth. You'll explore how line, tone, contrast, and composition work together to create dynamic, balanced drawings, observing the way light and atmosphere play across the urban scene. Back in the studio, those sketches become the foundation for a structured composition, ready for painting.

Session 2: Tonalist Painting in Watercolour & Oil
In the second afternoon, we shift into painting — using Elena’s tonalist techniques to capture the light, mood, and temperature of the city through a simple, limited palette. Working in both watercolour and oil, you'll discover how each medium interprets the same urban subject differently, learning to suggest light and temperature with painterly economy and intention.

Throughout both sessions your tutor will guide you with live demonstrations, hands-on feedback, and time for personal exploration.

All levels are welcome.

Elena Stogneva

Lena is a professional artist and illustrator based in Hertfordshire, UK, and an AssociateMember of the Society of Graphic Fine Art (ASGFA). With a background and degree in Architecture, she brings a sharp eye for perspective and geometry to her favorite subjects: urban scenes, street views, and city skylines. Working in an impressionistic style, Lena focuses on capturing the mood of a place. She is highly versatile, working with a wide range of materials from pencil and ink to oils during plein air sessions, though watercolour remains her favorite and strongest medium. Across all thesemediums, she consistently carries the same signature sense of light and depth of shadows.

Lena is a visual storyteller who is never without a sketchbook. Her work is regularly featured in London open calls and exhibited in highly prestigious galleries. Alongside her own practice, she runs workshops dedicated to unlocking creativity in others. “I believe you have to see and feel a subject before you draw it. I love catching the buzz of the city, its people, energy, and cultures and I’m translating that into my art. I want my paintings to act as messengers that share those emotions with others.
